2016 NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL MOCK TRIAL CHAMPIONSHIP HOSTED IN BOISE BY IDAHO LAW FOUNDATION

national-hd-mock-trialpngThe 2016 National High School Mock Trial Championship was held in Boise, Idaho.  Every year an average of 30,000 high school students participate in local high school mock trial competitions for a chance to compete in the National High School Mock Trial Championship tournament.  The 2016 national tournament event was hosted in Boise by the Idaho Law Foundation, the charitable arm of the Idaho State Bar.

Over 500 students from around the country participated in this year’s national tournament. State champions from across the United States, as well as Guam, South Korea, and the Northern Mariana Islands traveled to Boise to compete for the national title.  All rounds of the competition were held at the Ada County Courthouse.

According to Carey Ann Shoufler of the Idaho Law Foundation, 250 local people volunteered as judges or in other roles. Equipped with her professional experience and knowledge of the court system, Moffatt Thomas Legal Administrative Assistant Kelli G. Mahan volunteered as a scoring judge for the tournament.  She stated, “It was interesting and a lot of fun for the students and volunteers alike!”

Mock trial competitions challenge students to try cases in front of real judges using real world scenarios, in real courtrooms, under real rules of evidence and procedures. Idaho has participated in the national tournament for the last two decades.  This year, Iowa placed first in the competition and won the national title.  Two Idaho schools ranked in the top ten.  Honorable mentions went to 6th-place Ambrose School in Meridian and 7th-place Logos Secondary School in Moscow.
